About Our Cause

The firefighters at Rhinelander Fire Department are unionized as part of the IAFF and PFFW. Our local union, Rhinelander Firefighters Local 1028, does an annual "Pink Shirt" shirt sale to raise funds for local breast cancer fighters. As we sell our pink shirts (and all other items), the proceeds enter our benefit fund, which goes directly back to the community.

The proceeds from this specific event, however, are redistributed to local breast cancer patients, currently in the fight. We allow nominations for the patients to receive the funds and make decisions at our union meetings. We give a portion of the proceeds to a patient in November, and the other portion to another patient in December. This allows the families to have more expenditure and a bit of relief as the holidays approach. 

These pink shirts are enjoyed by RFD Firefighters and we are given permission to wear them on shift in support of the cause. Our local hospital staff at Aspirus-Rhinelander are also given permission to wear these shirts on duty as well, and help us to spread the cause.
